This is a tan, pinkish-tan or brown frog with a dark brown mask through the eye and ear. A think ridge of skin is present along each side of the back. Wood frogs average from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches (45 to 63 mm) in body length. In Missouri, this species lives in cool, forested ravines where small, fishless ponds are available for early spring breeding. The voice is a quick series of waaaddick sounds. This species has been listed as endangered in Missouri, but due to new information on natural history and distribution, the status will soon be changed to rare.
