I believe, as bad as it sounds, Mama Cat also cleans them this way. That is why you never see the poo or pee. Put a litter box down around them and she will teach them later how to use it. Kid you not. I have done it!

Kittens are not able to move their bowels by themselves at this age. The mother cat has to stimulate them to go to the toilet, otherwise they they would die of chronic constipation. It's amazing that their instincts tell them exactly what to do!

i think a good momma cat is supposed to do this as gross as it may seem it helps the kitten survive i believe
