Air around Earth at its terminator (the "twilight" line where light and darkness meet) refracts or bends a small amount of light so that it still manages to reach the Moon. That light has traveled "edgewise" through our atmosphere, so it is reddened much like sunlight that we see at sunset or sunrise.

This is a great demonstration of Celestia's power.
Of course I wonder if the opening scene in 2001 a Space Odyssey isn't in fact depicting this very eclipse. And the sequel 2010 the Year We Make Contact isn't also referring to this very same event.
