Catholic Church donates millions of dollars to Haiti

Other countries, associations and NGOs from all around the world are working to help. In fact many are turning to the Catholic Church to send their support.

Caritas International says its helping some 200 thousand Haitians with food, drinking water tablets, blankets and medical supplies. Volunteers are delivering the goods at 20 different parishes. The organization says this type of first aid assistance will be needed for months to come.

Caritas International also plans to launch a rebuilding program that will last a year. For the moment, the NGO has received 33 million dollars, although it anticipates 42 million will be needed to reap the costs of the disaster.

Meanwhile, Catholic Relief Services, has delivered 25 million dollars to Haiti, of which 17 million were provided by people who donated during the days after the quake.

Catholic Relief Services is just one organization on the long list of religious congregations helping in the aftermath of the earthquake. Help to the Church in Need donated 70,000 last week, now theyre prepared to send another 100,000 dollars to help more than 200 seminarians who have been left with nothing. Manos Unidas, the Spanish NGO, has also donated 500,000 dollars.

The Church has vowed it will not only help those in need during the week after the earthquake, but it will continue working with Haitians like it has done until now. Thats why the church will keep urging people to donate.
