According to Hoyle. It's an old expression, meaning, 'going by the rules.' Hoyle was an English lawyer in the 1700s who wrote the first book of rules for card-playing (whist, the early form of bridge).

Gee-zus! How lazy do you have to be to think popcorn is hard to make? Actually EZ Pop Popcorn was more work because you usually had to put out a fire half way through making it.

E-Z Pop's parent company Taylor-Reed went belly-up in 1980, and lost a patent infringement suit against Mennen Food Products, makers of Jiffy Pop, in 1963. Seems Jiffy Pop's spiral foil pattern was an improvement on E-Z Pop's "button" pattern.
