would u suggest this lens for general telephoto lens and some amateur sports photography? or should i look at the tamron 70 300 vc?

I just got my Nikon D3100 for xmas and I'm thinking about getting this lense. Is it worth it? Also, I was wondering, what does the VR switch even do? I'm Confused xD

This lens is terrible do not get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the image quality is good but the auto focus speed is slow as a turtle and makes it super hard to photograph slow moving subjects. Save up a little extra money for a 70-300 vr which has a lightning fast auto focus speed.

I ordered this lens the other day for $249. It should be here within the next hour or so :), and after watching all the videos and reading the reviews, I'm really excited to try it out :D
thanks dude, really helped me to decide what lens to buy, specially when you talk about to be an enthusiastic photographer (and of course money is tight). Most of reviews make it seem that if you dont buy a $3000 lens then you are buying a crap lens. As I am a biology student I will use it a lot. So thanks for the help, and sorry for my english. Greetings from Argentina

@juanmarex Thanks, you will enjoy the lens. My wife and I love Argentina! We visited Buenos Aires a few years ago. We want to go back someday. Cheers!

will it work with nikon D60??

@juniorceaser This lens has its own focus motor, so it should autofocus with the D60.

I use the 70-300 zoom on my D90 with awesome results. I photographed my neices's graduation from the University of Alabama in December 2011. I sat near the top and was able to read the music sheets on the orchestra's stands. I no longer use UV filters unless in windy conditions. I don't own an Airstream, but a 28ft Carri-lite TT. I enjoy your videos and plan to use my D90 to shoot more videos of my camping and motorcycle adventures. I hope to see you on the road sometime, and thanks again.

@jimmycornett Hi Jimmy, thanks for your comment (and congrats to your neice!). My brother has a D90 and loves it. I agree that the 70-300 is an excellent choice also. See you on the road someday. Roll Tide!
