Interesting. Wayne's autobiography (the one written right after his trade to LA) says he wanted to stay an Oiler for life and doesn't mentioning the maneuvering. However he alludes to feeling underappreciated at times. Do you have a source for this take on the trade? Researching Gretzky is something of a hobby of mine, I was born in 1982 and was a fan of his ever since my dad told me he was the greatest hockey player of all time in about 1985.

Pocklington mismanaged his other non-hockey companies and was more or less bankrupt. After the 4 championships the Oilers had sold out their tickets for the next 10 years, so marketing was actually irrelevant, the franchise was assured of the ticket money. Pocklington cashed in on Gretzky's value by trading him for a large amount of cash and a couple so-so players. So a pure greedy desperation move that betrayed Edmonton and Gretzky.

I'm australian, there is 2 rinks within 1000 kms of my house, I have never been into Ice Hockey until this year and I have to say, gretzky just makes you want to play Ice Hockey, I'm playing a game tomorrow, and I can barely skate.
