@BradNC11175 You had mentioned Robert Welch and he founded and led the society from the 50's until the early 80's. The headquarters was located in Belmont, Massachusetts until 1989 when it was moved to Appleton, Wisconsin (Joe McCarthy's home town). Congressman Larry McDonald (D- Georgia) led the society after Robert stepped down in the early 80's. Larry McDonald was the most conservative Democrat and a cousin of Gen. Patton, but was on KAL 007 that the USSR shot down on 1 September, 1983.

@BradNC11175 The JBS was always an anti communist organization, but they always knew that Communism was only one stage of the insiders goal on their path to one world government. I have never heard of the JBS being accused of being Communist, but the left has tried to label them racist, fascist and tried to connect them with the American Nazi Party and Ku Klux Klan. Their claim was never substantiated, as the JBS is a constitutional and god centered organization.

@stephenabm I have a high regard for the John Birch Society and have thought of joining it myself. But the JBS was accused of being subversives to my understanding during the red scare. But then again in those times to call someone a communist then was like calling someone a racist today. So it should be no surprise that the JBS were dubbed communist then, same as today the enemies of the Tea Party claim them racist, rather it be fair or not. For that matter JBS have been called racist as well.

@BradNC11175 Robert Welch was close to Joseph McCarthy and the society has defended him since him leaving government. I have never read any criticism of Joseph McCarthy coming from the John Birch Society, only positive comments. I have been active in the society since 1994. I have read about John F. Kennedy's respect and admiration of Senator Joseph McCarthy in both the society's writings and JFK's personal writings and verbal comments. Both were tied together due to their Anti Communist drive.

@stephenabm Joe McCarthy was actually very close with the Kennedy family and the god father of Bobby Kennedy's daughter Kathleen. Senator John F. Kennedy was conveniently abscent when the vote to censure McCarthy. The Kennedys & Truman loathed one another and nobody was a bigger thorn in the side of the Truman administration than Joe McCarthy. Robert Murrow brought McCarthy down more and would become JFK's director to the USIA. Joe McCarthy was no friend to the John Birch Society by any means.
