  • Thank you guys for all the nice comments. Jay wrote beautiful songs....

  • Nice job, guys. Despite the "official" songwriting credits, this song was a nearly 100% Jay composition (that's why he put it on his solo album with Ed Burch) written about his niece who was a newborn at the time he wrote it.

  • I just thought it was best to add Tweedy's name to the credits. Since he is credited in the booklet. I have all of Bennett's solo albums, and the one he did with Burch is amazing. "Palace at 4am".

Another song Jay dosen't get enough credit for is "Jesus ect". He did alot of work on that one.

  • You obviously don't need any info from me about Jay's music, as you know it very well. I only commented as I am an old friend of his from high school and college. The last time I saw him in person was a few months after "The Palace" had come out, and he shared the story of this song with me. RIP Jay

  • Hey man, I didn't know who he wrote it for/about. Thank you for sharing that. Now I love the song even more. I got into Wilco back in High School, and since then Jay Bennett has been one of my musical heroes. I kept following his career after he left Wilco. I can't belive that he is gone. Thank you for sharing man. And I'm sorry that you lost your friend.

  • Edward Burch here. Thanks for the tribute to Jay.

If you follow Summerteeth, it's Bennett/Tweedy; If you follow Palace, it's Bennett/Burch (though speaking for myself, i didn't really deserve much, if any, writing credit). I suggested a chord change, and Jay gave me writing credit. Jeff probably suggested something on the Wilco version, and so Jay gave him credit. He was a delightful, generous man.

  • Hi Edward. Nice of you to comment. I only checked the sleve for "Summerteeth". A good chord change can make all the difference sometimes, so a credit might not be out of order. I feel like changing it now. Sorry for screwing it up. Anyway, thank you for commenting, I really love "The Palace at 4 Am" and I'm sorry that you lost your friend.

    Peace - Jan

  • Lovely song and beautifully performed. Living in the country I also appreciated the backdrop which somehow adds to the wistfulness of the song. 5*'s
