The Ptarmigan Traverse is the crown jewel of glacial climes in Washington State, and in fact perhaps all of North America: a spectacular off-trail high route weaving between the glaciated peaks of the North Cascades, and never straying far from the crest. It requires extensive off-trail wilderness navigation and glacier climbing experience. It is also a test of self-reliance, athleticism and a steely commitment. The rewards are the views, the climbs of peaks so remote that this traverse is their only realistic approach. The adventure and self-fulfillment of it all is best described by Greg, the climber-singer-songwriter in "Down," the soundtrack of this video: "...a hero, a human ethic, its been forgotten, but its yours..."
Fantastic! How I miss the North Cascades.
