Lifesize robot models were used in various non-fighting scenes but all the stuff with the bots moving and fighting is motion-cap CGI. For example, the scenes in the end fight when Atom is back in his corner and being repaired, that's a real robot model.
Some of the bull in the first fight was CGI too.

@robshenton Agreed. I'm a VFX Compositor and have 14 feature films to my name.
It's not always been this way, but now - Special Effects generally refer on-set effects such as explosions, in-camera effects, optical illusions shot on camera, prosthetics or make up.
Visual Effects now generally refer to computer generated effects - CG Monsters, Green screen replacement backgrounds or if the image is digitally altered in any way.
The two often mix! Like with miniatures.

The mic on that interview is whats dumb.
There's a difference between Special Effects and Visual Effects.
I'd say these are Visual Effects.
