  • There's a difference between Special Effects and Visual Effects.

I'd say these are Visual Effects.

  • Lifesize robot models were used in various non-fighting scenes but all the stuff with the bots moving and fighting is motion-cap CGI. For example, the scenes in the end fight when Atom is back in his corner and being repaired, that's a real robot model.

Some of the bull in the first fight was CGI too.

  • Technically they did use robots

  • sooooo through the movie they were seeing nothing?!!!

    now I fell cheated

  • @robshenton Agreed. I'm a VFX Compositor and have 14 feature films to my name.

It's not always been this way, but now - Special Effects generally refer on-set effects such as explosions, in-camera effects, optical illusions shot on camera, prosthetics or make up.

Visual Effects now generally refer to computer generated effects - CG Monsters, Green screen replacement backgrounds or if the image is digitally altered in any way.

The two often mix! Like with miniatures.

  • awesome sfx!

  • Best special effects ever!

  • nice movie and awesome vfx by digital domain

  • The mic on that interview is whats dumb.
