This video was submitted to the 2011 ESA YouTube Your Entomology contest by Dr. Joseph Spencer, from the Illinois Natural History Survey, who writes, "It is a 2 min. 58 sec. video about the prairie cicada, Tibicen dorsatus. I filmed it as an introduction to one of the iconic species present in the Loda Cemetery Prairie and nearby prairies in east central Illinois. The video closes with a segment of Chinese mantid predation on a prairie cicada male. It is quite astonishing how durable the 'noise-making' function is in this creature ... with barely half a head he can still protest! Loda Cemetery Prairie is a 7-acre island of original tall grass prairie surrounded by a sea of corn and soybean fields. It is a beautiful place to escape the corn desert and a favorite, fertile ground for photography and videography. The HD video was created with material I shot mostly on 6 August 2011. I used a Canon 7D camera with a 24-135 mm zoom lens, a hotshoe mounted microphone and a tripod."
