This show is hardly a representation of typical American mentality. True, the producers look for attractive dimwits as contestants, but the popularity of the show in the US centers on people saying to themselves, "I can't believe she doesn't know France is a country." In order to say that, you first have to know it yourself.
And the US has no corner on the ignorance market. Some of us do travel, and we know the rest of the world has its share of morons too.

Yes a good point!
only there is a laugh track on US shows, or with a live audience, there are red and green and multiciolored lights, which order them to "laugh" or "boo" or "hiss" or "applaud". So the audience's reactions are not at all genuine.
