Leaving Astoria, OR on June 16th, the Splendor almost ran over a fishing boat! Nobody seems to know why the Splendor waited til the last second to take evasive action. From what most of us guess, the ships electronics turned the ship hard starboard automatically to avoid a collision with a fishing vessel that seemed to be holding it's course minding it's own business. The pools and spas lost about 1/3rd their water when the ship leaned over in the sudden turn. Some dishes also broke when they hit the floor. Surely some people were injured, but that seems to be a hush hush situation.

  • awwwww...now all the fat people except this person that ride carnival arent going to be able to eat because of the broken plates

  • What makes more sense, makeing the 11000 ton cruise ship turn hard or a couple of hundred pound fishing boat?......CRUISE SHIP

  • i was on that cruise a year later and once during it the cruise ship swayed and i hit a pole. i also walked into several poles but not the point

  • @sacmom3 because it wasnt that serious.

  • @yoface459 they royal caribbean ship crashed into them when they were leaving port.

  • @yoface459 not anymore :P its back sailing from long beach.

  • @Smithyards Just in case, part (d) states "Any subsequent alteration of the bearing between the two vessels shall not make the overtaking vessel a crossing vessel within the meaning of these Rules or relieve her of the duty of keeping clear of the overtaken vessel until she is finally past and clear."

  • @Smithyards The poster said the ship turned to Starboard and the boat was on the port side in the vidio. It's clear the ship was approaching from more then 22.5 degrees abaft the beam, but, if you're overtaking some one (like a slow moving truck on the highway) their bearing will change to be alongside and then behind you which is why part (d) exists.

  • @Smithyards It also looks like the fishing vessel had running lights on only. Also if the carnvail was in a channel then this rule would have come into effect :9. Narrow channels * A vessel proceeding along a narrow channel must keep to starboard. * Small vessels or sailing vessels must not impede (larger) vessels which can navigate only within a narrow channel.

(Part b, section 9, sailing and steering)

  • @trentin24 I'm going off the footage... (which looking from it the fishing vessel was on the port side)

An overtaking vessel must keep out of the way of the vessel being overtaken. 'Overtaking' means approaching another vessel at more than 22.5 degrees abaft her beam, i.e. so that at night, the overtaking vessel would see only the stern light and neither of the sidelights of the vessel being overtaken
