Part 3 of many of an afternoon spent talking about how to get your book published, hosted by best she-writer Alda Teodorani in her class about how to WRITE your book. Three different publishing systems are compared in this video, including traditional publisher with bookseller distribution, print-on-demand with the Lulu.com business model and traditional publishing with own distribution. Specimens of such printing systems are shown.
In the first case a publisher invests a few thousand euros to cover all the needs, granting the author royalties in the range 0-1000 euros (about 7% of the cover price of the book, that usually sells a few hundred copies) to be paid in a 18-24 month timeframe.
Print-on-demand requires a little technical knowledge and returns full control of the sales at no cost, giving the publisher-author a royalty in the 30-50% range, with immediate cash.
Paying a typographer to print some hundred to a thousand copies of your book requires an initial investment in the 1000-2000 euro range and asks you to promote it physically, including P&P (post and pack) delivery.
The worst case (pay-for-publish) and the best case (a publisher printing and distributing more than 2,500 copies and giving the author an advance in the range 500-1500 euros) are not described.
