You couldn't really exactly notate birdsongs, I think that they're just a sort of melodic and rhythmic source material the way previous composers may have used folk songs or any form of pitch derivation, the design is in creating the work, serious music can't be reduced to its source materials.

I love this whole series. The setting is perfect for the music, the sacred space, and it's wonderful that the altar is next to the piano! What a great player.

@sharmoota120 This was composed in 1944, so, the 20th century, or "Modern Era". This is probably the piece out of the set that is the most post-impressionist, though.

wow great piece played incredible!! does anyone know what era this was written in ?

You don't like Mozart, you don't like music. You don't like Messaien (here, anyway) and you have no ear for tonal music based on thirds - very old fashioned stuff. Nothing more abstract here than Debussy. (It is Liszt who almost always used far too many notes.) I'm betting that Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms would all be quick to say open your ears, and stop being such musical sissies about old fashioned well-made tonal music. This stuff is already "the New 'Old Music.'"

@alezander666 You are obviously unaware of WFMT 98.7, live stream and archive programs. They're so good people around the world listen to them. Yeah, they mostly play public domain works (its the budget, dummies) but they do cover the turf from very early pre-baroque to the ongoing tradition, the "New OLD music of the 20th century - goad - goad, and very current works. I think Wolfie would have been the first to tell you to stretch your ears, call you a musical sissy.....

@Punagun Its just music - It is actually somewhat the opposite of 'sophisticated.' You've a better chance of open ears to lovely sound if you abandon some preconceptions, perhaps melody or form bound. A lot of the greatest music, from Mozart all the way through, is not about a tune. This is not far from a lot of the Debussy Preludes..... Open your ears to rich tonal sonority, think of it as ambient music. Most important is repeated listening - it makes the strange more familiar. Best regards.

The music always resolves to soft and enduring end.

@Punagun Stop "trying" to understand it! Listen and appreciate it for its unique language.
If only those silly birds didn't keep interrupting. lol I gotta respect the guy (Messiaen) for his devout belief in God and dedication to expressing that in his music, but I suppose my ears just aren't ready for his music yet.

dont listen to oiseaux qotiques yet then. its almost entirely based on birdsong. it won a grammy in february, so messiaen must have done something right with it, heh.

I try and I try and I try ... but I simply can't understand this kind of music... please, somebody help advise what I can do. I'd like to be more sophisticated.

just let go. just listen to it. let the music overwhelm you entirely. just concentrate it. there is no need to understand something to like it.
