Esther Phillips was perhaps too versatile for her own good, at least commercially speaking; while she was adept at singing blues, early R&B, gritty soul, jazz, straight-up pop, disco, and even country, her record companies often lacked a clear idea of how to market her, which prevented her from reaching as wide an audience as she otherwise might have. An acquired taste for some, Phillips' voice had an idiosyncratic, nasal quality that often earned comparisons to Nina Simone, although she herself counted Dinah Washington as a chief inspiration. Phillips' career began when she was very young and by some accounts, she was already battling drug addiction during her teenage years; whenever her problems took root, the lasting impact on her health claimed her life before the age of 50.

~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

"What a Difference a Day Made" is a popular song originally written in Spanish by María Méndez Grever (María Grever), a Mexican composer, in 1934. Originally, the song was known as Cuando Vuelva A Tu Lado.

The English lyrics were written by Stanley Adams, and was played by Harry Roy & his Orchestra. It was published in late 1934. The song is also known as "What a Difference a Day Makes".

Dinah Washington won a Grammy Award in 1959 for Best Rhythm and Blues Performance with this song. Her version was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. It also earned her her first top ten Pop hit, reaching #8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Esther Phillips's 1975 disco remake was a top-20 hit. ~SOURCE:Wikipedia

  • @abocas Yeah, I lost my best friend to drugs. We met when we were 9 years old and were like brothers. We went to college together as roommates and then he got to using. He died and old man before he was 40. I had to cut him loose when he got addicted because he was trying to drag me down with him.
