  • Excellent performance! Quality!

  • @DCanfield1 Mussorgsky originally wrote Pictures at an Exhibition for Piano.Mikhail Tushmalov made the first arrangement of it for orchestra, however some movements were omitted. Henry wood then made one in 1915 which omitted several of the promenades. The first complete arrangement for orchestra was by Leo Funtek. Maurice Ravel wrote the most famous and popular arrangement to date, omitting one promenade and applying artistic licencse to some notations and dynamics.

  • The original piece is actually for piano, so someone other than Mussorgsky must have made the arrangement that you played. If you can find out and let me know this information, I'd appreciate it very much, as I am doing research on Pictures at an Exhibition in all of its more than 450 arrangements. Many thanks, David

  • Big Bank Vault Door

  • @DCanfield1 I do believe it is the original piece, we just switched out some parts with the organ since this was our last piece and our lips in the brass section was pretty much blown out... I would've liked to play the whole thing tho :P

  • Where else can you find so much written for the gong? Is that a traditional Russian instrument? Always thought it was Chinese. This is the one piece for which I wish there was a gong about eight feet in diameter. I think that final dynamic marking must be "blastissimo." Excellent sound, band. Very, very nice.

  • Whose arrangement of Great Gate is this? I like it! Good performance, too.
