Always carry chains for all 4 tires.

Found my '78 FJ40 straight 6 and gearbox had excellent low-end torque for rock crawling but was not real good in deep mud. (Hence the PTO winch. =] ) They are very heavy and low geared. Big V8 with lighter vehicle is good in mud but doesn't have the traction and torque on rock. Seems when I read off-road magazines CJs are always pulling FJs out of mud and the reverse is true going up steep rock slopes. I think FJ40 is best all around stock off-road car ever produced.

I am a Land Rover owner but have to admit that those models of Toyota's are extremely nice looking vehicles. I don't know about their off road ability as I have never looked into them, but just saw one the other day and I was a little jealous.

yeah both are diesel, see surfponto's comment bellow, says its a BJ42, I dont really know my Cruiser Models well enough
