On October 11 2006, a small plane piloted by an amateur crashed into a residential skyscraper on 72nd Street in Manhattan. My mother Lila and stepfather Gene were in their apartment very close to the burning crash, and had to walk down 37 floors to safety. Channel 11 News interviewed them for this broadcast.
The real irony is that the amateur pilot who crashed into this building was Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle. We are a family of Mets fans and have always hated the Yankees.
