How much is your health & safety worth? I would rather pay the men that are saving lives a higher salery, then give it to city managers that steal millions. You get what you pay for. Buy American and turn this ship around! Put America back to work with good paying jobs and everyone will profit.

@READYROCKS Unions need to be destroyed. They served a purpose at one point and now they are doing nothing but destroying our country. (GM, or unfireable teachers anyone?). Boo hoo about their not receiving social security, they didnt have to pay a dime into it did they? If a family of 40k a year got to invest that 15% social security stole at 5% compounded annually they would get 8k a month @67 instead of 3k for the rest of their lives and still have a sizable chunk to leave to their family.

The firefighters and police sold out to Meg Whitman. She said "no change in your pensions for your support." They gave it. Jerry Brown refused to give the deal - this is what triggered the political whore remark. While nasty, it's true. Everyone knows that the pension system will have to change, but now all of the savings must come from teachers and nurses (state bureaucrats will slip through probably).

32 hours of overtime A WEEK is a distortion.  OT is typically a function of staffing issues related to illness or injury. IF this were an actual situation, I'd be upset too. You're not presenting the factual reality of the vast majority of fire departments. Are you against public art, too? Do you expect a magical army of volunteers to landscape and maintain your parks? Fare well, and I hope you never have that bad day that requires you to call 9-1-1 (it might change your mind about this).

There have always been firefighters who felt entitled, just as there have always been citizens who resented paying their wages. These are two extremes used as devices to make a certain point. Small and/or rural departments often have great difficulty finding enough volunteers to fill a roster. Those volunteers are typically motivated to get experience commesurate to qualifying for hiring. The commitment, as a volunteer, is a fraction of the time invested by the professional firefighter.
