Hey everybody. Just wanted to make a short little video on how to DFU restore an iPod Touch or iPhone. This method is also called putting your iPod/iPhone into recovery mode. Pretty straightforward, but here are the steps:
Hold down the home and sleep/wake buttons until your iPod/iPhone turns off. Release the sleep/wake button and while still holding the home button, plug in your device via USB or firewire. Next, a connect to iTunes logo should appear and iTunes should detect a device in recovery mode.

Hope this video teaches you something!

  • what if it wont restore and it says due to error (14)? shit man,

  • Are you shift+clicking restore?

  • Same problem here :/

  • Well, what firmware are you trying to restore to?

  • i try with 3.0 and 3.1 or w.e the new one is

  • Hmm...

Go into the task manager and get rid of all Apple processes before restoring. So close out of iTunes, open the task manager, and then close any processes that deal with Apple, iTunes, and iPod.

    Then retry the restore.

  • For whatever reason my iPad would not update to ios5, after trying several different suggestions. I followed this video precisely as shown, and it worked!

  • I just got through reading about DFU recovery. I've been trying the regular recovery mode for a week with no luck (which is the mode you're showing in the video). DFU requires that you stop pressing the power button before the apple logo comes up. It never actually does come up. DFU mode actually looked to me like the ipod was turned off, but it finally was able to restore it. I'm going to assume my ipod's firmware got messed up because DFU actually restores that before restoring software.

  • Doesn't fucking work. Whenever I hold the home button and the other button, it closes, and opens up again.

  • Does this erase your data?

  • i clicked shift+clicking restore but then it said "the system required for communicating with the ipod is not installed correctly. please reinstall itunes to install the ipod's software" wat should i do?? :/ do i reali just simply reinstall itunes?? i just updated it tho!

  • Hey there - maybe you can help me. I made it to the last step of your video.

    • My Ipod Touch suddenly stopped working. I turned it off & it never started back up.

    • It is stuck on the apple logo screen (with the circle of moving bars – as if it is waiting to do something) and never moves on from this.

o I tried syncing it: an error occurs. I try installing a new ipod. seems to work.

o When plugged in, I can access it through itunes. Just not work it manually.

    Thanks for any help!
