For the truth, I suggest reading the October 1912 issue of National Geographic Magazine (NGM) to learn that Tibet was ruled by the Qing Dynasty and the Ming and Yuan Dynasties before it. The doctor that wrote the piece in NGM was sent to Tibet in 1907 by the Chinese Emperor and he stayed for two years.

For more evidence, I suggest reading Robert Hart's letters pubished by Harvard University Press (ISBN 0-674-44320-9). More than 50 letters mention Tibet making it clear that China ruled Tibet.
