  • @trx1961 I did a Varsity Coaster, did a few other mods on it too...did a video for it. It's white with a custom fit rear carrier rack...check it out on my channel. I also have a White Varsity 10-speed with canti-studs & V-brakes, it's BEAUTIFUL!

  • VivaMicah,

Yea, the single speed conversions are all the rage right now, I have another collegiate that is a single speed conversion. It's worth doing because, its kinda a win/win, (1)If your bike turns out to be everything you expected, that's great.(2) If it falls short of what you were expecting(and it turns out that a modern road bike is more your thing after all), than you could easily sell it, due to their high popularity at the moment. Don't think it over too long, trends come and go!

  • How much is it worth, in like same condition with chrome fenders an brand new tubes?

  • I had a bike like that. It was stolen from my garage in Lincolnshire, IL. It was a great bike. Yours is in mint condition. I forgot the shifters were mounted like that.

  • @gcorp87 FML I got it for $80

  • Got my first Schwinn Varsity spring 1968- in 8th grade and it opened up a whole new world for me. I quickly went about upgrading it to Schwinn 1 1/8" Puff gumwall tires. Had seat tool bag, a cyclometer for keeping mileage and frame pump for flats- Rode my first Century ride in 1970 on it, and my first bike race in 1971- finished second in the Indiana Junior Division to Wayne Stetina on his chrome Cinelli- thanks for post!

It bike got stolen then, and I ended up with a full-Campy Gitane.

  • i have a 72 yellow varsity as well, i got it for free it was sitting outside in the ohio elements for 11+ years its rolling nice now my favorite bike

  • picked one up for $50 the other day....all original parts etc... pretty good needs some tires down the road

  • I am on my 2nd Varsity resto. The Varsity is generally pretty easy to work on, and they are great to ride. Extremely durable even in urban conditions. Interestingly, both my Varsities are 1972, as is the one I have in storage to do for my niece.
