How to play Djembe - Taufiq Qureshi - The Art of Indian Fusion Drumming

In the second DVD disc, Taufiq delves in to the language and technique that is the foundation of his unique percussion style. Here he focuses on expressing traditional Indian classical rhythms on the Djembe, which he also refers to as the TABAL or single drum. Taufiq has adapted the rhythmic language of Tabla Bol (or syllables) to Djembe technique, and uses this new language to perform classical Indian rhythms on the Djembe with other musicians. In this disc, Taufiq provides the first-ever comprehensive look at this language, and offers a master class for beginner, intermediate and advanced students of rhythm across musical genres.
The significance of this new langauge developed by Taufiq is enormous, in that it now allows percussionists who do not have a Tabla or Indian rhythm background to now explore these concepts on other drums. The Djembe is a universally used percussion instrument that is NOT traditionally based in Indian music and allows Taufiq a great vehicle to express this new language.
Taufiq also demonstrates some of his favorite rhythm grooves across musical genres, played on the Djembe. Later, at the end of an intense 2-day recording session for Ultimate Guru Music, Taufiq joined Jakes Srinivasan for an impromptu Djembe jam session, and a heart-to-heart discussion about his music and musical influences.
