Little Sunflower by the late great Freddie Hubbard.

A beautiful tune well suited for improvising. I play all of the horn parts and play the solo on video only.

  • Great job, im Freddie Hubbards son DUANE, This is the type of stuff my dad enjoyed. Listening to players enjoying the music and practicing to get better, Keep up the good job. Check me out on facebook. DUANE HUBBARD. GOD bless you and yours.

  • @DUANESKEE - It's an honor to have you comment on this video. Thank you. Your Dad has been a big inspiration to me as I find myself listening to his recordings over and over. His musical expressiveness and raw trumpet talent are a huge inspiration for me and many other trumpet players. Thank God he lives on through his videos and recordings. God bless you!

  • i play guitar and was wondering what scales and chords are you improvising with? i know the chord change...

  • @dunksnotpead - thanks. Actually I improvise mostly by ear and would have a very hard time telling you what scales/chords I'm using. I guess it's the result of hours and hours of listening and experimenting with what sounds good.

  • You are incredible!! You did Freddie some serious justice. He was definitely one of my favorite trumpet players and the Love Connection lp was a great one!! Look forward to hearing more from you!!

  • @NetMoDM - Thanks. I love Freddie and take that as a serious compliment.

  • @dunksnotpead The song is in Dm. The first chord of the B section is Eb Major I believe, and the second is D Major. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please. :)

  • hi dude!

    Amazing !!!

    Sounds good !!!

  • I really like this man you got some nice licks man I play trumpet my self. and you have imspired me thanks:)

  • Was searching for Freddie Hubbard classic pieces. I agree wholeheartedly, you did Freddie's classic justice. Love the effect of the flugelhorn!!!!

  • @dunksnotpead

with a piece like this, the Dorian mode is used predominantly.

The notes of the Dorian scale are the same as those of the major scale which is one tone below.

So - in this piece, you would play the notes of C major, but starting on D. Hence the dorian mode is always the 2nd mode of a major scale.

The 3rd mode is the Phyrygian scale, which Spanish guitarists typically use - if you wanted to emphasise that, you would do the notes of C major but starting on E.

  • nice solo - nice flugel too (I might need to get a new one, it's been beaten up so much that it's hard keeping it in tune)
