I designed and built this skidsteer from scratch to be easy to maintain and very durable. The frame and arms are 2x4 3/16" tubing and the sides, bottom, and bucket are 1/4 plate steel. It weighs 1000 lbs. It can lift 500 lbs in its 4 ft bucket to about 61/2 ft high. It is four wheel drive using two hydraulic motors and a 13 hp engine. The engine runs a 16 gpm 2 stage log splitter pump. There are two 2/spool valve assemblies plumbed in parallel so it can lift and tilt at the same time or operate both drive motors at the same time. This is done with a dividing valve. It has electric start and recoil backup. I used trailer wheels because of the availability, low cost, descent load capacity, and good bite( they hook up well - I didn't need floatation from a wider tire). I designed the drive hubs from trailer hubs for ease of service and reliability. The bucket was torch cut from plate steel and has a wear edge. The 10 gallon hydraulic oil tank was welded from 1/8" sheet and it has brazed on pipe fittings for supply and return lines. The bucket and arm pins are 7/8 inch grade 8 bolts that rotate in 1' steel tubing acting as bushings. The bushings are fit into 1" schedule 80 pipe that has been drilled out slightly to recieve the 1" tubing. I fit both of these "bushing housings" with grease zerks. I experimented with this design before and have found it inexpensive and tough. This way you can replace the busings as they wear.




I have about 2500 dollars into the skidsteer from the steel to filling the hydraulic oil tank. I sat down to design it just after Thanksgiving 2009 and finished in about 45 days. It is a pretty capable machine for my yard and driveway, but no substitute for the real deal!

  • This is awesome and I would like to build something similar. So im a little confused can it drive and move the bucket at the same time? And are you using one joystick to move the bucket and one to control the movement (like a newer skid steer) or is it like a lawnmower/older skid steer loader controls?

  • @foxbro2012 also, how are you getting power to the wheels from the hydraulic motors? sprocket and chain?

  • @foxbro2012 I am using gears and chain and a 4:1 gear reduction.

  • @foxbro2012 I am using two double acting cylider valves on each side of the loader. The outside two operate the wheel motors respectively (left one left motor-right one right motor). The inside two operate the lift and bucket tilt. The wheels can be operated at the same time and the bucket controls can be operated at the same time. The two hydraulic valve blocks are seperated by a dividing valve.

  • The motors are 11.85 gpm Dynamic motors and the pump is a 2 stage Haldex.
