I have been wanting to upgrade and rebuild my workbench for sometime but just haven't gotten around to it. I think the time is now so I'll begin work once I get the current project finished. In this video I'll about my present one and what I like and don't like.

  • 4 legs would be a good idea. Mortise them into a 3 1/2 inch thick solid top. Maple is not too expensive in you laminate the pieces together. You should read The Workbench Design Book - The Art & Philosophy of Building Better Benches and Workbenches: From Design & Theory to Construction & Use by Christopher Schwarz.. I'm sure you are done with this now,

  • @xfup When I move into a larger shop I plan on building another bench or 2 and will try other construction types with them.

  • I made a sturdy bench out of yellow pine 2x's 10 years ago and it has held up just fine. I flatten it every couple of years if it needs it. It was very inexpensive material wise. I guy named Bob Keys put the plans on his website. The site is no longer up but the plans are still available on the net. Google bob keys bench.

  • 2X4s from the box store are to soft and will not last or remain square, @xfup is right about the maple top.
