Albanians claim to be the true Ancient Greeks, and they offer two arguments for this claim: that they wear the same hats, and that they use the same words as Ancient Greeks. This video is about the first statement.

The Albanian hat, called Plis, or Qeleshe, is taken from the Ancient Greeks, who passed it on to the Romans, then to the Christians of Byzantium, then to the ottoman turks.

Here are the facts:

"Headgear has always had a profound significance in the East. One glance at a mans head and you knew his religion and his social status. The Fez is not really Turkish but of Greek origin. Two centuries ago the Turks wore Turbans and were devastated when ordered to abandon them and adopt the fez."

(Hilda Amphlett, HATS, p 212)

"Another common type of travelling cap was the conical or sugar coat shaped pilos cap. Pilos was the Greek word for felt. It was also sometimes worn under the helmet as a cap-comforter. As hoplites discarded equipment in search of mobility, they adopted this cap instead of the helmet. Eventually a new type of cap-helmet, which we know as the pilos-helmet, evolved, copying the shape of the felt cap in bronze. This type of helmet probably originated in Lakonia."

(Nicholas Sekunda, Adam Hook. GREEK HOPLITE 480-323 BC, p 59)

"The origin of the mitre is to be found in a head-covering or pre-Christian times. Headgear in a decorative sense was almost entirely absent among the Greeks. For utility there were two head-coverings the PILOS and the PETASTOS."

(Herbert Norris, CHURCH VESTMENTS, p 95)

"The pilos was a skull-cap made of felt, fur, or skin, and worn by lower classes, such as soldiers, sailors and artisans. A variation of this cap was conical in shape, with a top like the small end of an egg, resembling a truncated cone or fez."

(Herbert Norris, CHURCH VESTMENTS, p 95)

"A band (Greek mitra) sometimes surrounded it to make it fit more tightly to the head. Another type of the same cap had below the band a piece of the edge left, free all around, so forming a brim often of considerable width. It was not always circular but cut into various shapes convenient for practical purposes, so that parts of it could be turned up, down, or sideways as protection against sun or rain. To guard against wind a strap or cord could be fastened under the chin or at the nape of the neck. A hat of this kind was known as the petasos."

(Herbert Norris, CHURCH VESTMENTS, p 95)

"The Greek word mitra was utilized for any kind of band, including one for binding the head worn by both men and women."

(Herbert Norris, CHURCH VESTMENTS, p 96)

"The Romans of the Republic adopted both the ordinary pilos, which they named PILEUS, or pileum, and the conical pilos. These were worn by the commonalty of both sexes except slaves; who, however, when they had attained their enfranchisement, were permitted to wear this headgear to cover their shaven heads. On that account the pilos has been known as the Cap of Liberty."

(Herbert Norris, CHURCH VESTMENTS, p 96)

"By the eighth century the pope, being normally an elderly man, whose head needed protection from the cold, had adopted for outdoor processions and other purposes the common headgear of men of the period, which in his case was made of linen and served as a conical or skull cap. The first mention of this headgear as worn by a pope is to be found in Liber Pontificalis, wherein it is stated that Pope Constantine (708-15) wore this kind of cap when making his solemn entry into Constantinople. It is there described as a CAMELAUCUM, i.e Imperial Crown, because though really a frigium it is worn by the pope. The camelaucum dates back to classic Greek times, and was originally a skull-shaped cap or pilos, made of camel-hair cloth with ear coverings like the flanges one sees attached to the helmets of the warriors by whom this cap was often worn."

(Herbert Norris, CHURCH VESTMENTS, p 97)

  • It's just funny that Albanians are the only one wearing the ancient hat and guess what they call it PLIS. Btw, today's Greek traditional dress is borrowed from the Arvanites(Albanians) who helped freed Greece from the Turks, the only difference is that they made it shorter! Greeks should remain quite!!!

  • @dangerousnick1 The Byzantine Empire was a multicultural organism! And the Byzantine Church and all of it's customs where founded by Saint Andrew, brother of Saint Peter and It belonged to every Christian!
