A quick tip for those of you who suffer from a poor framerate in Team Fortress 2.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Open up your anti-virus program
2. Go to the settings menu
3. Select Exceptions/Exclusions
4. Add this directory to the exceptions:
C:\Program Files\Steam\appcache\stats
On 64 bit:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\appcache\stats

WHY IT WORKS
The contents of this folder are frequently updated by TF2, because Valve loves statistics tracking. When this happens, any anti-virus program worth its weight in salt will scan it to make sure the changes aren't malicious, eating up your processor power while you're playing. Adding this folder to the program's exceptions will keep it from scanning it.

Note that in light of this, Valve has optimized their stat tracking. I would still do the process shown in this video anyway, if I were you. New stats to track are being added with every content update, besides the fact that even though changes to this file are now less frequent, your anti-virus program still scans all the changes.

DO NOT ADD YOUR ENTIRE STEAM FOLDER TO THE EXCEPTIONS LIST. If you get a virus, it might spread to somewhere in the Steam folder (which is a very large folder with many folders within it), where your anti-virus program will not find it.

  • Hey i am using a singel core pc but i am hyper threading so should i use multi rendering or not? :(

  • @DamedaZenZenDameda It wouldn't hurt to just try one or the other. Use the console command:

    cl_showfps 2

to see your framerates (averaged over the course of a second for easier reading). Try it with it on and see what you get, then turn it off and restart the game and see what the difference is. Obviously use whichever gives better results; I couldn't tell you for sure in that case.

  • After two years of TF2, I want to thank you and ChrisCTX for this awesome tip (or whoever figured this out), it finally really worked.

  • @Mixaraah It was Chris, I just made the video c:

  • Does this only work with TF2, or does this work with other games?

  • @hpland12 TF2 records way more stats than a lot of other games, and even then, results vary wildly between computers and AV programs. In other words, I don't know, probably not that much?
