On January 25th of 2011 Egyptians traded their fatalistic Insha'Allahs (If God Wills It) for signs brandishing Game Over Mubarak. It was an unusual outbreak of self-determination which ended Hosni Mubarak's 30-year grip on power. The collective soul of Egyptians demanding justice played out on TV screens around the world as an epic struggle of good against evil. The courage of young Egyptians displayed in Tahrir Square inspired a tidal wave of peaceful resistance against oppression and injustice -- from Yemen to Madrid, New York City to Oakland people are taking to the streets.

But what's next for Egypt? Their transition to democracy has proven to be more difficult than ousting their former dictator. Once celebrated as the protector of it's people and entrusted to guide Egypt through it's transition period, the military has now become the new face of oppression to many Egyptians. Other troubling signs are emerging; the solidarity that defined the Revolution has fragmented. Sectarian violence has bubbled to the surface. Egypt, expected by many to be the beacon of democracy for the Middle East, now finds itself on the tipping point; its people stand at the crossroads of success and failure, inspiration and despair, hope and fear.

HOPE & FEAR -- Egypt on the Tipping Point begins at that juncture. We capture a remarkable and unfolding period in the lives of five young activists involved in women's rights, community development, free speech, artistic and entrepreneurial initiatives. HOPE & FEAR takes the viewer on an exhilarating ride that feels more like a Hollywood drama than a political documentary. We bring you along on their personal journeys as our activist struggle in their own way to navigate through difficult terrain hindered by an oppressive military regime, economic instability, and religious violence. And though their opinions might differ on the nation's new direction, our activists share common aspirations for a future full of opportunities.

Through our activists, we also explore the larger challenges and implications for Egypt, such as whether the homeland of civilization can maintain civility in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and grow to serve as a model for democracy for the greater Middle East. Nothing less than the future of the region hangs in the balance. Despite the success or failure of the youth movement to bring meaningful democratic changes to their nation, HOPE & FEAR's intimate portrayal of it's characters shows the common thread the unites humanity: the human spirit's refusal to capitulate to oppression despite the costs.
