Teaching Jasper the cat to "sit pretty" instead of begging.

My cat, Jasper, used to always beg when I was cutting up meat. He would stretch up at the counter and even sink his claws in my pants. I taught him to "sit pretty" (or as some know it, "beg"!) as a trick, and now reward him for doing that behavior instead. The climbing and clawing is steadily diminishing in frequency.

If you have a dog or cat who begs at the table or in the kitchen, try rewarding them for doing an alternate behavior instead. Sitting or lying on a mat or bed works very well.
