When we decided to make a fifth Benji movie, Benji Off the Leash, Kathleen and I struck out across the country to find the new Benji in an animal shelter and media flocked to follow us around. The American Humane Association had reported that the original Benji's rescue from a shelter caused more than one million adoptions. We wanted to recreate that model. Local and network television, radio and newspapers covered the search, with the ultimate selection being a feature on ABC's Primetime Thursday and Good Morning America, and our floppy-eared mutt went on to star in the highly acclaimed Benji Off the Leash in 2004. The search and Benji's new movie generated more than one billion media exposures for homeless animals and the efforts of shelters and rescue groups all across the nation.
Brought tears to my eyes! I went to see the new Benji in the theatre and I loved it! My son isn't allowed much tv but we are slowly introducing him to these wonderful films.
I remember how exciting this was when it was happening. All our animals are strays or adoptions. Thank you so much for everything you do!
