I've been having problems with dropped calls with my new iPhone 4, and last night, while on the phone with an apple tech he made the following suggestion:
turn off the phone and eject the SIM card.
power on the phone without the SIM
go into Settings, General, Reset, and select reset network settings
the phone will reboot itself
when it comes back up, re-insert the SIM card.
I did this and for the first hour or so, I couldn't make the signal bars drop at all.
then walking around the house, I suddenly lost signal completely, only to have it come right back, but weaker than before.
I redid what I now call the "SIM eject reset" and for the most part, my signal has improved. Haven't dropped a call since, and this video was taken in a part of my building where signal strength is NIL. There is 1 bar at best, and it won't even indicate E or 3G. But I made the video to prove a point. I was still able to make a call, and I never dropped it (although I probably would have if I had held it a bit longer against my palm). I would not have been able to do that yesterday.
There is still an antenna issue, but for those that are having over-all issues with dropped calls, give it a try and see if things improve for you.
Hi, can you please tell me how you open the sim card area?

@TheTorontoDJ
You need a small paper clip or something similar. push straight into the hole on the side of the SIM tray and it will pop out.

@Gr8Hawk Thanks I got it open. How can you tell if it's unlocked or not?

@TheTorontoDJ How can you tell if what is unlocked? Are you asking if you can tell if the phone is locked to a carrier? You can't. Not directly. I the phone is unlocked, it should have been disclosed to you when you bought it.
If you bought it for a subsidized price then you are in a contract and it's definitely locked- unless your carrier allows you to pay extra to unlock it towards the end of your contract.
