One of my favourite hymns from my school days. It also happens to be a favourite with Mahatma Gandhi eventhough he was a Hindu. May be because the song addresses God simply as "Light". It's like Christians liking George Harrison's "My sweet Lord", not knowing which "Lord" he sang to!

  • Gandhi was not a Hindu, and to make a statement that he is one is particularly unfortunate considering he was a man who repeatedly claimed that he believed in all religions, worked for the upliftment of Muslims(whom many Hindus were violently against, particularly at the time of independence), and pleaded for secularism all his life.

  • @NithilaaR all that you say is true except that he thought Ishwar and Allah are the same spirit and his final words when he was shot at was "Hey Ram!"

  • My favourite hymn from school..

  • Mine too!

  • A beatiful version and video, a compliment to the great saint who wrote this song

  • This hymn means a lot to our family. My fathers related the story of his brother aged 19 was sick in a coma at the point of death, The family gathered around his bed when he suddenly awoke, asked for a rag doll from his childhood. It was handed to him. He then proceeed to sing this hymmn Lead kindly light from start to finish. When finished he closed his eyes and died.

  • Praise to the Lord and His Glorious Saints who have done His will throught the ages.

  • Nice presentation. Yes it was one among Mahatma Gandhi's favourite hymns. Watch Classic Hymns 300 voice choir from Chennai India sing this hymn. The other of Mahatma Gandhi's favorite hymns were Abide with me , "Rock of Ages" and "When I survey the wondrous cross".

  • Thank you very much! It is wonderful.
