You absolutely cannot reason that anatomical changes meant the onset of verbal communication, and as much as I love these documentaries, they are chock full of errors. Just because H. erectus had the correct anatomy conducive to verbal communication does not mean that it did in fact communicate verbally in any sort of way more sophisticated than chimpanzees, and as a physical anthropology student, I know of no good research indicating H. erectus likely did speak.
