This is Missouri's largest frog. General coloration ranges from green to olive to brown. The hind legs may be heavily marked with dark brown bars. Bullfrogs lack the two ridges of skin along the sides of the back found on the other rana species. Bullfrogs average form 3 1/2 to 6 inches (90 to 150 mm) in body length. This large frog lives in a variety of aquatic habitats: swamps, marshes, sloughs, lakes, ponds, rivers and creeks. Bullfrogs eat insects, crayfish, frogs, small fish and other small animals. Male bullfrogs produce their familiar "jug-o-rum" calls throughout the summer. This is a game species; check the Missouri wildlife code for current seasons and bag limit.
