Metasonix MIDI to 'CV' converter. This unit takes in regular MIDI and outputs CV - but there is a twist!
The unit does not have a specific CV standard programmed into it (it's not V/Oct or Hz/V). Rather, the unit has an audio input and at the press of a button it learns what CV it needs to output in order to get the sound source to play each note.
Why? Well, if you connect it to a regular VCO it does pretty much what any other MIDI to CV converter does - but - if you connect it to something like the rate CV on an LFO it can actually learn what CV it needs to send the LFO in order to make the LFO play notes! Yep - you can use this unit to turn some pretty weird stuff into an oscillator that tracks (for example: a looping envelop with the CV into decay time or a sample with the CV into the playback sample rate). If you want to do something a little more conservative, you could use this device rather than having to constantly play with the scaling trim pots on your VCOs to make sure they track properly.
The unit also responds to pitch bend (adds directly to the CV output) and has a built in LFO with four different waveforms (adds directly to the CV output).
The unit is connected to a prototype Metasonix VCO in this video. This VCO tracks to neither the V/Oct or Hz/V standards.
