Communism did cause industrialization, but in Mao's China he pushed the population too hard into it and caused many deaths through starvation.

In a strange way Stalin's forced industralization may have allowed the country to resist Hitler; of course Stalin was brutal to the peasants who refused to go with his plans, leading to high death tolls.

The problem with Communism is that authoritarian leaders can force people into lunatic campaigns.
