Amir's research interests are primarily in the area of circadian rhythms. He is using molecular, neuroanatomical, physiological and behavioural approaches to study the nature, regulation and function of circadian oscillators within limbic forebrain regions important in stress, motivation and emotion. Amir also studies how external and internal time signals gain access to and regulate the activity of brain circadian oscillators, as well as the modes and mechanisms of plasticity within the circadian system. Amir was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Academy of Sciences in 2008, Fellow of the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2007.
