Protest Nike: Second Sin the social cleansing of the homeless in Shibuya, Tokyo (a dubious gentrification plan)
Due to limited numbers of temporary shelters provided by the Tokyo social welfare service, many people affected by the global financial crisis in Japan are now forced to live in public parks. While these parks are the only refuge for such people, NIKE, under the guise of making a 'social welfare donation', is converting one of Tokyo's principle parks into a purpose-built sports facility that will also serve as a lucrative advertising space. We oppose this decision, which will increase hardship and social misery for impoverished and displaced people. Since NIKE's worldwide headquarters is located in the United States, we call for our American friends and friends in other countries to restart protests against NIKE and its harmful business practices.

  • this is really important work! how can we support the effort to provide homes for the homeless in Tokyo and to keep the park public? Miyashita should be public! Keep the faith!!

  • i dont think such corporations like this can maintain the park for the public good, and im sure they are going to use this to further brainwash the people into commercialism. i hate corporations like nike!!

there should be other ways around to bring the safety back to the park, other than just leaving its responsibility to a business with no interest for that. im disappointed with what shibuyaku has done...

  • public facilities like parks shouldnt be corporatized especially when it's a conglomerate like Nike. Nike has sucha nice image thanx to millions of $ put in to sell its nice images, but behind all the corporation-made-up images is sweat shops, unfair trades with developing countries and tremendous amount of cost to the mother nature.

  • You guys in the US don't know anything about Miyashita. This park is filled with bunch of homeless people, and its known as a dangerous spot in Tokyo.

I, as a resident in Shibuya-ku, am glad to hear that Nike is opening the park for everyone.

I understand the feeling of homeless people living there, but I also think the park should be kept clean and safe.

  • i wish we could know more! let us know what happens!

  • it would be great if you could put more information. let us know what happens. really wishing you all the best. how has nike responded?
