Pepper Ave. overpass on the east side of Union Pacific's West Colton Yard is a great place to watch trains.

UP's newest GEVO's (#7717 and #7703) are on the point for the two trains I saw at different times. Along with the ubiquitous SD70M's, you'll also see a Dash 9 (UP #9642, ex-SP #8178), two-window SD60M (#2516), and a Dash 8, C41-8W #9509.

  • ok all you foamers...even though I work for the U P, they do little, if anything, to tell us about track improvements (unless it directly affects the mechanical department)

Most of my co-workers would like to know just what the hell is going on east of Pepper? Double track to the BNSF diamonds? Or is this some shoo fly in preperation for a flyover at the diamonds?

  • Rumor is that additional main line will be installed between Pepper and Rancho and it will be "cut in" (with any other appropriate reconfigurations) between June 6 and June 10. I might try to visit later to see what the new tracks look like.

  • Did he do shave and a haircut?

  • Nope, just two quick bursts of long-long-short-long. Not sure if the hogger did it for me or the work crews down below, but it was a special treat.

  • The latest video I posted has a hogger deliberately doing a shave and a haircut.

  • GEVO's look weid, I like Dash-9's better. Cool shot still. They're not getting any respect from railranns (UP), because they have know put no tresspassing signs all over the Tecachpia loop!

  • I can't complain about the UP "hoggers" (engineers) as they wave, give an extra honk on the horn, and make friendly gestures wherever I railfan.

But I've heard about the extra security on Tehachapi lately... a shame, since it is a railroad mecca.

  • @pengapop12 and CP, you can still see a wide variety of SOO, ICE and DME, but STL&H and D&H are scarce now. i do agree, CSX still has alot of older power still running, its just been painted over into CSX paint

  • how many horsepower there?

  • csx i think is the best, well run, and they still have most older units out in service still, most other railroads, like UP, have either scrapped or put um in storage

  • thanks...while our train loads are down noticeably, it's nice to see the Company is still optimistic about it's future

  • ok all you foamers...even though I work for the U P, they do little, if nothing, to tell the rest of us just what the hell is going on with track improvements (that's if it doesn't directly affect the mechanical side of the business.)

My fellow railroaders would like to know just what the hell is going on just east of Pepper? Bouble track main to the diamond or is this some shoo fly in perperation for the flyover at the diamond?
