Turned out Garret was in her AP English class as well. He arrived timidly, and upon noticing her familiar face, smiled and sat in the seat next to her. She couldn't quite lay a finger on it, but something was up with that kid.
Class was a bore as usual. Today Mr. Burton was lecturing about the book they were reading, The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Paige was wholeheartedly in love with the book. It was amazingly, indescribably good; she hadn't been able to put it down.
"So what's the book about?" Garret asked her at the end of class. She knew he was looking for any excuse to talk to her. Even if it was as lame as homework. Paige couldn't help but roll her eyes as she answered him. "It's called doing the reading, genius," she answered him, a little rudely. She couldn't help it. It was the end of a long day; she was tired.
"What's your problem?" he asked testily. He was now glaring at her.
"Look. I don't appreciate wise ass skirt chasers approaching me every--" she began.
Garret laughed. Loudly. "You think that I . . . " he asked incredulously. He laughed harder. "Newsflash--you're just a junior. I'm a senior, with a world of opportunities in front of me. And if you think they include you, you better go get your head checked, you pompous whore!"
Paige felt her cheeks turn red and her mouth drop into a huge O. She had grown up with the words "bitch" and "whore" and such, but it still hurt to hear them from a complete stranger. She was about to say something, when she felt a protective hand suddenly rest on her shoulder.
"Your mouth just said what?" the familiar voice queried.
Paige turned around and looked up at Nate's big brown eyes. Have you ever looked into someone's eyes and just knew that it had to be the most beautiful eyes in the world? And you didn't want to argue with anyone either because you don't want to see anything else...just those eyes?
Yeah. That's how she felt...right now.
"My mouth just said that Paige is a little whore who just assumes people who are nice to her are in love with her," Garret answered back narrowing his eyes into Paige's.
"Well, personally, we both know a secret about how you truly feel about Paige. And word of advice, Garret...that's not the way to bag a chick," said Nate. Paige felt her cheeks burning. Were they on fire?!
"Oh come on, Nate!" said Garret looking at him kind of pissed off as he run his fingers through his messy dirty brown hair. Nate just shrugged to him and Garret walked the other way, away from them. Paige looked up at Nate, pretty sure she looked like she had 'I Love Nate' plastered all over her obvious face.
"Thank you," she said to him. He smiled at her.

Did I tell you I would refer to the Paige in this story as myself? Cause I am. BTW, my best friend wants me to read 5 People You Meet In Heaven. He says it's good. Is he right?
