  • @ItsLogicSpoc I agree, no one should break planning law, but they do need some ground to reside on, and they do have the right to reside in the UK. We provide social housing for rent, so why not provide pitches for rent for people who have their own caravan. I’m not a Gypsy nor a Traveller, but if I needed to live in a cost-effective way, buying a caravan would be a useful option.

  • @newagemisfit i cant argue that, that is for the councils to decide. Simply because the council has not assigned land for you to live on does not mean you have the right to live anywhere you want. i dont know the solution to this but i do know that irrespective of any racism towards them by the general population they are making things worse by just squating on land and refusing to leave when order by the courts. They will need to justify to the courts why council housing is not acceptable

  • @ItsLogicSpock I agree, and I want planning permission for my land. But these people are from an itinerant tradition that used to be able to camp/work in various places. Times have changed, but over the last 70 years we have built millions of council houses and today we recognise a need for affordable and social housing. Why can’t we provide suitable sites for anyone who wishes to live in a caravan/mobile home? Seems like a cost-effective way of easing the housing shortage to me.

  • @newagemisfit i have no problem with them living in caravans, and maybe they have no option but to squat illegally, but you cant just setup shop where you please. Sure have your culture and live your way but you must follow the law. As an example i saw a show where a group purchased land, unfortunately you could not live on it - i suppose it was farming or grazing land. but then the owner gets upset when asked to leave. That is the law it has nothing to do with culture

  • @ItsLogicSpock I'm no expert either. But I see it like this, these Gypsy and Traveller folk are of different tribes - they do things differently to us because they always have. I don’t think we should attempt to impose a cultural change on anyone – if non Gypsy/Traveller people can live in caravans why cant Gypsy and Traveller people live in caravans? They’re not fat bankers or industrialists they’re a nomadic minority whose way of life is harmless and no one’s business but their own.

  • @newagemisfit please keep in mind i am no expert, while i feel sorry for them that there is no real place for them to live i also feel it is wrong to complain that you have no where to live when an alternative is being offered. i understand what you said - maybe the alternative is not preferred but surely an undesired house is better than nothing. like i said i have never been in this situation - but for the wellbeing of my family i would do anything.

  • @ItsLogicSpock OK. But what if your preferred solution was a caravan and you had already provided for your housing need. What if you just needed the representatives of the local community to allow you to live in your caravan anywhere in the vicinity, but this was refused. What if giving up your caravan made you feel like giving up your ethnicity, what if the bricks and mortar made you feel distressed. After all you saw their preferred solution as being a ‘temporary solution’.

  • @newagemisfit i am sure the laws are not fair for every one, but i do think that if my last resort was a caravan on a Traveler site then i would use that as a temporary solution until i could find a preferred solution. Having a roof over my head would be priority number one.

  • @ItsLogicSpock Do you really believe that planning law in England is implemented in a completely fair way? If the council offered you a caravan on a Traveller site would you accept it?

  • Jethro makes an excellent point. Fuck people who do this shit, be they pikeys or not!!
