@kirstentemplar. Imagine that!! Can't quite grasp the courage it took to sing this on his way to the gallows.

Vuyisile Mini, he sang this on the way to the gallows after being found guilty of treason. <3

Miriam Makeba é uma rainha para nós brasileiros. Defensora ferrenha de valores culturais que nunca podem ser esquecidos.

@ NatTurner: Joe5hg mentioned "Amandla!" in another comment on this vid and I'd recommend looking that up as an excellent source for the history of SA protest songs-- all kinds of songs, really. The soundtrack is beautiful, and the movie itself is actually available to watch in its entirety here on YouTube. It's on... the Lionsgate channel? I think?
Otherwise, just searching for other songs sung by Miriam Makeba or Vusi Mahlesela will get your search off to a good start.
Good luck!

My parents have an a capella recording of this song on vinyl with the lead taken by the bass voice (there's an excerpt of it on the 'Amandla' film alongside Makeba's, as well as a poignant recording by Vuyisile Mini's family). Does anyone know which group recorded it? - It's on an album of songs and poems composed by Mini and others, but I've forgotten who made the album

Another classic from the one of the greatest female musicians (if not the greatest) to emerge from the jewel that is Africa. Very emotional. Oh God help me, I can't stop crying...!

We used to conclude our struggle against apartheid meetings with this song. The police would be waiting outside with loudhailers, guns and disperse ultimatums. But we defied untill hell broke. We were what Makeba was singing about. RIP Mama Africa.
