I fought against the bottle, but I had to do it drunk
Took my diamond to the pawn shop, but that don't make it junk
I know that I'm forgiven, but I don't know how I know
I don't trust my inner feelings, you know feelings come and go

How come you called me here tonight?
How come you bother with my heart at all?
You raised me up in grace,
Then you put me in a place where I must fall

Too late to mix another drink, the lights are going out
I'll just listen to the darkness and i know what that's about

I tried to love you my way
But I couldn't make it whole
So I close the book of longing
And I do what i am told

How come you called me here tonight?
How come you bother with my heart at all?
You raised me up in grace,
Then you put me in a place where I must fall

I fought against the bottle, but I had to do it drunk
Took my diamond to the pawn show, but that don't make it junk
I fought against the bottle, but I had to do it drunk
Took my diamond to the pawn show, but that don't make it junk

That don't make it junk
That don't make it junk

  • this deeply profound song is about the mans search for freedom from sense pleasure, "took my diamond to the pawn shop" refers to him pawning his soul... were true freedom resides, as all genuine poets such as leonard knows only too well... and choosing indulgence... but he knows that he's forgiven because he understands the nature of spirit deep within us all... anyway, i just thought i would educate the bewildered masses ;-) yes folks...

  • @trudster Did this person have permission to submit this, that's a requriement und YouTube's copyright policy.

    Jest spoko.....

  • "its took my diamond to the pawn SHOP", not show.

  • Fascinating words... love this man's writing style...

  • This sounds more like Tom Waits singing this. This has that gravely sound that Waits puts into all his music. That voice that sounds like 20 miles of bad road is so expressive!

  • a superb contemporary poet whose work translates to song so well...when he is the singer
