With a single flat pick, Mr. K is getting clean melody, rhythmic chords, bass and a bit of percussion, brushing the strings. I know that Chet became famous for sounding like two guitarists, but this clip of BK sounds like a whole string band!

Barney was one of the most inventive jazz guitar players. With that in mind, my guess is that Barny was using that massive ring on hs right hand as a counterbalance to aid in the sweep picking and ultra-fast down-strokes so evident in this video.

wow, barney kessel is a god of jazz guitar. he makes me want to practice every second of my life until i can sound like him, and at the same time give up on guitar altogether because i know i will never be half as good. wow nice post

There's definitely a Barney sound, but at the same time he takes such risks that you're never completely certain he's going to make it--but he always makes it. He plays on a tightrope with no net. And never falls. Amazing.
