A Birch Victrola playing the Purdue Military Band and Purdue Glee Club from RCA Victor recording. To your call once more we rally, Alma Mater, hear our praise!, Where the Wabash spreads its valley, Filled with joy our voices raise, From the sky in swelling echoes, Come the cheers that tell the tale, Of vic'tries and your heroes, Hail Purdue! We sing. All Hail! Hail, Hail to Old Purdue, All Hail to our Old Gold and Black, Hail, Hail to Old Purdue, Our friendship may she never lack, Ever grateful, ever true, Thus we raise our song anew, Of the days we've spent with you, All Hail, our own Purdue.
That second to last line is often sung wrong. It is present perfect (it started at some point in time in the past and continues).

  • What year was that recording made?

  • The date is not shown. Here are some lines from the cover that give a clue or two.

"The offering of this first edition of an album of recordings by the famous Purdue Band makes available to the public several of the favorite marches of this organization collected and brought together for the first time." "The Purdue Military Band is a department cooperating with the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Purdue and, as such, furnishes music for parades, reviews, and ceremonies."

  • Furthermore, and in conclusion, I present this additional quote from the book of recordings. "Fittingly enough, Director Emrick is a product and a 1908 graduate of Purdue Univeristy. His service began when he assumed the directorship of the band in his sophomore year. He has been a major influence in the creation of large university bands throughout the nation. Under his leadership the band has reached in 1950 and all-time high in membership of 180 men." There is more on Emrick and the band.
