Welcome to media watch. Each month this series of videos will examine medical and health subjects in the news and report to you those things that are not quite right. This month we looked at the program The Doctors, Oprah and featuring Dr. Oz. Oprah has said that she wishes to devote many of her shows this year to health and wellness. Oprah is right. Oprah and Dr. Oz have set forth a plan for viewers to follow, including diet and exercise and other lifestyle factors such as rest and sleep. Sadly they have almost eliminated the use of dietary supplements in their program. Oprah and Dr. Oz seem to forget that our food provides only about 50% of the basic nutrients we all need for optimal health. The Doctors TV show addresses many subjects as well. TV doctors often present information based on the show sponsors. Many prime time shows are sponsored by drug companies. Oprah talked about her under-active thyroid condition, which she said went undiagnosed by four different doctors! It took Oprah several years while being treated for the symptoms, before she found a doctor that correctly diagnosed her condition. If it can happen to Oprah, it can happen to you too. Doctors often are guilty of treating symptoms rather than the cause. Thyroid diagnosis is often overlooked because the tests that are used for under-active thyroid are incomplete. An accurate thyroid diagnosis is essential if proper treatment is to be used. Dr. Oz has pointed out that the medical industry often overlooks many diagnoses. Always check your medical tests and question The Doctors. Other topics discussed this month include osteoporosis and bone loss. Osteoporosis and bone loss seems to occur as we age and is found more often in women. One of the biggest causes of bone loss, leading to hip fractures is the over-use of antacids, so common today. Antacids alkalize the body, which can slow or prevent the uptake of calcium. Not all calcium supplements are the same and many provide poor absorption. Hip fractures and other problems can be avoided by taking a proper calcium supplement on a daily basis. Your calcium supplement should include trace minerals to increase absorption and prevent bone loss, osteoporosis and hip fractures. The Doctors TV show often discusses things such as osteoporosis and bone loss but fails to tell viewers that these problems can be completely controlled with the right supplements. Another study coming in the news this month is the dangers of over-use of those antibacterial soaps. People are always using them in fear of germs. This and the over-use of antibiotics leads to a weak immune system, which then cannot protect you when really needed. The study proved that these soaps and lotions do not kill many of the more dangerous pathogens. This gives the user a false sense of security. By lowering immune function, these products weaken us and when a real invasion takes place, our body will not be able to rapidly meet the challenge. Ages ago, before we had all these antibacterial products people were actually much healthier. The Doctors TV show also discussed something called C-Reactive Protein, a substance in the blood that indicates the presence of inflammation. It can signal the presence of certain chronic diseases as well as the risk for a potential heart attack. C-Reactive Protein rises as a result of what is called silent inflammation in the body. Silent inflammation is dangerous because it cannot be felt. The longer this silent inflammation goes on the higher the levels of C-Reactive Protein levels. Instead of using powerful anti-inflammatory drugs with many side effects, there are natural substances that have no side effects and can effectively control silent inflammation. Inflammation is a protective factor of the body, but prolonged inflammation or silent inflammation can produce deterioration of structural tissues in the body. By using a natural supplement to control inflammation and silent inflammation, we can control this problem with no side effects. We are on the Media Watch for you. Each month we will discuss the top stories involving health and wellness. We will tell you when they are right and when they are not giving you the whole story. This month Thyroid deficiencies were a big topic, starting off with Oprah herself. Bone loss leading to hip fractures and osteoporosis seems to always be in the news. Both of these issues can be supported nutritionally with key, targeted dietary supplements rather than the drugs have not only have many side effects, but are also often only mildly effective.
