I dont think much info was released on them, but based on the story told and drawings seen, they were an opposite race equal to that of vampires. Winged creatures. After the war they had fallen and were trapped within the pillars, now mere wreaths, like raziel, who seek to extinguish the world of vampire bloodlines.

@DevilMalice blood omen 2 explains alot more, people say Blood Omen 2 doesnt make sence, but thats bull, i played it, and the story makes complete sence, it was a younger Kain before he became vampire emperor, he meets the Hyldan and the Late Sarafan.

What i did miss in Defiance was to be able of grabing multiple enemy weapons, like swords, torches, spears or rocks, ad throwing it to kill people and all that good stuff.
